Greetings as we head into the holiday season!
If you knew David, you knew that he was a self-proclaimed “clothes horse,” and kept a very watchful eye on current fashions and trends—a leftover habit from his advertising days that greatly informed how he dressed his cowboys and cowgirls in his art. He had an interest in creating fashion as well and over the years, tried different ideas from designing and manufacturing prototypes of sports jackets modeled after Matisse paintings all the way to hand-painting silk scarves. When working with fellow Santa Fe artist and web designer, Bette Ridgeway, a special opportunity arose, described by Bette herself:
One day in 2015, David and I were working on his website. He loved collaborating on the colors, fonts and overall design. He looked up and said, “You know, I’ve always loved women’s fashion. What can we do with my images in that context”?
I suggested we look into it, so about a week later I made a presentation, along with Sue Roderick, on creating a stunning tote bag. He loved the idea and chose “Just the Two of Us” as the image. He thought this depicted an elegance and the love that a woman can have for her horse. A perfect cowgirl, in his mind.
He signed off on the color, the materials, and he particularly loved the red interior. He loved the functionality of it. He said, “I’d be proud to put my signature on that.”
Soon thereafter, we scheduled a photo shoot at his friend, Star York’s ranch in Abiquiu. We hired a model, Alison Moon, and showcased his tote with the horses in the pasture. David loved all the photos, especially the ones with Fabio Picasso, my little fluffy white dog. Such happy memories were made in those times.
