National Day of the Cowboy Summer 2023

6/26/2023

Greetings, Western Art Fans!

Did you know there is a day dedicated to honoring cowboys? National Day of the Cowboy is a relatively new holiday occurring annually on the third Saturday of July (this year falling on July 22). The holiday may only have originated in 2005, but it recognizes centuries of history in America, practically beginning with the country itself!

Cowboy culture means different things to different people, but for David DeVary, there was one aspect of it that compelled him most when he started to paint the Western subject: being a cowboy is NOT glamorous work—it’s dirty, it’s unpredictable, it’s taxing on the body, and above all, it’s not for the faint of heart. Even with today’s advances in technology and machinery that help modern-day cowboys, it’s still a very hard job that is only done by those most dedicated to the craft.

David visited rodeos in the Southwest and often took candid photos to use later as inspiration for his paintings. Here is one of David's photos of a resting cowboy.

"A Tale In Every Pair"

David appreciated the hands-on, tough nature of being a cowboy and what interested him were the in-between moments of it. Whereas many artists focus on the actual actions of being a cowboy, such as the act of roping or of riding, David honed in on the times right before or right after that action, including the vulnerable emotions either building up to or coming off of completing the task. In this way, David honestly portrayed the spirit of the cowboy as he was in that moment. And then, to contrast the grit of it all, metallic leafing shines around David’s cowboys and girls to elevate them and reflect back the beautiful qualities they embody everyday. There is a lot behind the scenes of cowboy culture that is often passed-over because of the “cool” or “rugged” dream that America created around it. David witnessed both viewpoints, from that of the actual cowboy and that of “The Western Dream” (after all, he was working in advertising when the Marlboro Man was popular), and he expertly found a way to combine the two with his trademark authenticity and style.
