Greetings, Western Art Fans!
Did you know there is a day dedicated to honoring cowboys? National Day of the Cowboy is a relatively new holiday occurring annually on the third Saturday of July (this year falling on July 22). The holiday may only have originated in 2005, but it recognizes centuries of history in America, practically beginning with the country itself!
Cowboy culture means different things to different people, but for David DeVary, there was one aspect of it that compelled him most when he started to paint the Western subject: being a cowboy is NOT glamorous work—it’s dirty, it’s unpredictable, it’s taxing on the body, and above all, it’s not for the faint of heart. Even with today’s advances in technology and machinery that help modern-day cowboys, it’s still a very hard job that is only done by those most dedicated to the craft.
