June 2021 New Releases

6/17/2021

We have lots of news to share with you today! If you have received emails from David DeVary Fine Art in the past, you may have noticed that it has been quite a while since you last heard any updates from us.
First, I would like to introduce myself, as I’m a new (but not so new) addition to David DeVary Fine Art. My name is Lee DeVary, and I am David DeVary’s younger daughter, writing you from Boulder, Colorado.

It may come as a surprise to some of you that, sadly, David passed away in the fall of last year. He died peacefully at his home from natural causes, and so the reins of his art business have since been passed to me. He leaves behind not only many beautiful memories and stories from those of you who met him at gallery openings or swapped tales of the past with him over a homemade dinner; he also leaves behind a legacy of beautiful Western art that spans decades.

David during his days at J. Walter Thompson:

For almost thirty years, David worked in Chicago as an “ad man,” eventually becoming Senior Vice President and Creative Director at J. Walter Thompson. There, he was responsible for Clio, Cannes, and Addy-winning work for many of the agency's largest clients. He even received a Golden Lion for a TV commercial for our beloved favorite, Miracle Whip! In the evenings after work he would paint, and at this time his paintings were being sold at Gallery Lillian François in Paris and Chicago's Pavilion of the Arts.

Finally in 1989, a year after I was born, David broke free of his velvet handcuffs and we all moved out to Santa Fe, New Mexico, so he could make his dream of being a full-time painter a reality. As a child, it didn’t occur to me how unusual it was to have an artist as a dad; however, now I can truly understand how much it meant to him to find joy and success in creating a body of work that museum curators now call “New West Art.”

In organizing some of David’s belongings after his passing, I came across a treasure trove of incredible, high-resolution photographs of David’s paintings, some of which I had never even seen before.

Today we are very excited to present them to you as high-quality reproductions! Please enjoy our first release of these prints below and see more of David’s work at daviddevarystudio.com. We plan to release more new prints over the coming year. I’m very grateful for your support of my dad all this time—it was never something he took for granted, and we are all blessed for having witnessed his kindness, talent, and love for The West! Our goal is to continue to extend his legacy long into the future and hope you will join us for the ride!
